The idea

In 1543, a ship from Portugal reached a small island in Japan. Two worlds met, and neither stayed the same. Sentir keeps those moments, one voyage at a time, and turns them into scent.

The Voyage 01 / 04
I

Lisboa

A ship leaves the Tagus. Portugal has already learned that the sea is a road.

II

Goa, 1510

In India the route finds its first scent: oud and resin, dark and animal. The base of Namban begins on this coast.

III

Malaca, 1511

Spice, resin and silk pass through one port. Everything that burns, blooms or steeps travels east and west.

IV

Tanegashima, 1543

A ship reaches a small island in Japan. The Japanese call the visitors nanban: people from the south. It is the first recorded meeting between Europeans and Japan.

The Namban 1543 bottle, topped with a raw green stone.

The object

A stone, left raw

Every bottle carries a rough stone where a cap would be. It is not polished into something it isn't.

Nature does not repeat itself, so neither does a Sentir. Hold one and you hold something that is only yours.

The collection

A library of encounters

Every Sentir begins with one dated moment when two worlds met. Namban is the first. The next voyages stay sealed until they are ready.

Still at sea

We tell history as it is recorded, and we say where the record is uncertain. Details of that first landing are still debated by historians.
